THE
STORY OF "SHAVE ICE"
Shave Ice originated in China where they used hand tools to shave chunks of ice into a snow like consistency. Around the turn of the nineteenth century the Japanese invented a more effective manually operated ice shaver. "Shave Ice" was served in small bowls and covered with sweet syrups and sometimes fruits. When Japanese plantation workers immigrated to Hawaii to work in the sugar cane and pineapple fields, they brought the tradition of "shave ice" with them. It soon became an Island favorite. Tourist having tasted "shave ice" in Hawaii started looking for it in their own communities. The popularity of "shave ice" has spread to California and other states, and the demand continues to grow. Several years ago the Japanese introduced a motorized ice shaver which could produce a snow like consistency at a high volume rate. Since then, "Shave Ice" concessions have been springing up all over!!!
"Shave Ice" is shaped like a sno cone but unlike a sno cone, it is similar to freshly fallen snow and can be shaped into a mound 6 to 8 inches tall. Also, instead of the flavoring sinking to the bottom, in "shave ice" the syrup is actually suspended in the ice and does not fall to the bottom. This gives the shave ice an appealing color as well as a delicious taste throughout. The "shave ice" is produced by turning a block of ice at 250 revolutions per minute against a specially designed blade. Using three different flavors for one serving creates a rainbow of colors that is enchanting to all. While enjoying each flavor the shave ice melts in your mouth. It is the fastest growing, high profit treat on the market!!
A "shave ice" is a very popular item with a high rate of return. Your profits are limited only by your willingness.
The ingredients in making shave ice are the ice and the flavoring. Both are equally important in producing a high quality shave ice serving. HAWAIIAN FIVE-OH is very proud of the equipment and flavoring we offer. Our machines produce a snow-like consistency that actually melts in your mouth. Unlike sno cone machines which produces a crunchy crushed ice. Our flavors have been developed especially for use with shave ice equipment. Our flavoring actually clings to the ice instead of rushing to the bottom. The flavor is throughout the serving instead of forming a puddle at the bottom of the cup.
We look forward to talking with you in the near future about our "shave ice" equipment and syrups to you.
Concessionaires...These customers run a very profitable weekend business. There are festivals and special events every year in towns across the country. Hawaiian Shave Ice is a welcome addition to any festival. In the warm days of summer adults and kids alike can't resist this eye appealing cool product By the way adults are the best customers, unlike what most people think. It is not just for kids. To give examples about the kind of money that can be made, we do events in small localities such as Lebanon OH and large events that attract up to 500,000 people. In 1998 in a one day festival in Lebanon we had $2700.00 in gross sales. Our entry fee for this event was $50.00. Another very large event, we grossed $9600.00. Our current record is $17000.00 in one day! This is one day! Even the smallest events you should do a minimum of $500.00. I can show you how to do this.
Stand Alone Units.... Several of my customers operate shave ice units out of small portable on a daily basis. These units are strategically placed in shopping centers, busy traffic intersections along bike trails and what have you. Typically these units do not make the same daily gross that festivals do but I see experiences where my customers have made between $200 and $900 dollars per day. One unit won't make you rich, but it could pay for college. If you want to get rich run multiple units. By the way, drive thru's seem to be the most successful. I don't understand why the coffee people don't add this product. It would certainly increase afternoon and evening sales without much investment!!!
Wholesale...Wholesale you say? Yes ..there is money to be made by placing machines in amusement parks, ice cream stores, baseball and soccer fields, putt putts, family entertainment centers etc. The key here to making good profits is that you own the machines and you provide your customer with ready to use flavoring on an upcharge basis. You can set a rental amount on the machine or just upcharge on the flavoring. Typically your charge is $15.00 to $25.00 per gallon. Not bad for a product that costs you less than $5.00 per gallon. The customer is also happy because they receive around 70% gross profit with no initial investment.
Why do I tell you all this? Obviously I want both of us to make money. If I could do it all myself I probably would. But obviously I can't. The world is too big a place, but together we can do it. There is lots of money in this product. I've always been told that there are three things you need to be successful. Hard work, product knowledge and sales skills and hard work is number 1.
These are only a few suggestions on how to make money on this product. I'm sure you have your own ideas that would work. These happen to be some that I have made work and I'm sure you can too. How can you beat 90% Gross Profit? Especially when your initial investment can be around $2500.
